Our mission with Codess is to support the increase of diversity in the engineering field.
“Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”
~Francis of Assisi
With that said, we felt that it is important to have a forum for women to share their personal experiences in climbing the engineering career ladder, giving advice on what knowledge they have gained through their experiences and to learn from one another.
How does a woman succeed in engineering? That definitely isn’t a question that has a textbook answer! For a long time, engineering has been perceived as a male area and women active in these areas are often treated as exceptions. We felt that it’s about time women had a voice too and what better day to do that then International Women’s Day on 8th of March when women all over the world are showered with flowers, gifts and kind words. Over 120 women came to support us in our first attempt in sharing knowledge and networking as a community. The agenda for the evening was based on 3 women that shared their key experiences:
Elina Kostabi, Engineering Manager at Skype Wallet team talked about what we can do to encourage more women to take positions in engineering.
Jaana Metsamaa, Head of Engineering at Fortumo talked about her challenges in the field of engineering and how not knowing numbers is not a show-stopper when you’re eager to make it in engineering and when you know what you want. According to her it’s all about asking the right questions at the right time and saying yes to things that at first glance seem to intimidate. She encouraged women to say more often the words: “Challenge accepted!”
Svea Koppel, Lead Software Development Engineer in Test at Skype and also our last speaker of the night talked about her personal experience in managing work-life balance: how she reads books while stepping on a treadmill and how she has a rule about all laptops being closed at 10:30pm in the evening. Here’s a tip, try that at your own home! To sum it up, we met a lot of enthusiastic young women, we heard great feedback and encouragement to continue with this event series. With all of these wonderful wishes, how could we not decide to continue with Codess. This is just the beginning!
